Wednesday the 4th of April will see around 500 eager spectators gathering into the Guildhall St.Ives to listen to an inspirational man talk through some of his most daring expeditions. Doors will open from 7pm. Tickets are available from the St.Ives visitor Centre (01736 796297) and Fisheye Pottery Back Road West (01736 793863)
The money raised from the event will be going towards the St.Ives Jumbo Association fund which is carefully restoring and building traditional St.Ives working boats. In September ’07, for the first time in 100 years, a ‘jumbo’ was launched in St.Ives harbour.
It concluded the first stage of their project which aims to regenerate the harbour by establishing a racing class of replica 19th century fishing luggers.
Now, 3 years later, They have finally completed the second jumbo and so racing has become a reality! On Sat 12th June the new boat was launched in St.Ives harbour to join her sister ‘Celeste’. She was named ‘William Paynter’ as a tribute to the renowned boatbuilder who designed these jumbos back in the 1880’s.
A kind donation by St.Ives Brewery was made to help facilitate the raisining of money for this fine cause. A fully Licensed Bar will be operated on the night.
